Trivia[]

  • This is two songs combined into one. Jesus Christ and Up And Over.
  • Regarding Pt. 2:

"I was about 12 years old, I was at this (?) church camp and there used to be this bag of shit they'd give you that... there would always be a bunch of nude stuff. And Robert sent me this picture - drew this picture of me walking around naked with a bucket on my head, and he told me that he loved me. And this song sorta takes place there anyway."[1]

  • Regarding Pt. 2:

"For a lot of these songs, I was able to lock myself in a room and allow my mind to completely let out anything it wanted without me worrying too much about what anybody was gonna think. And I think that a song about God was inevitable, because of my upbringing, of the intense experiences I had growing up—going to these crazy Church camps where everything was very open. We talked about sexuality freely, we talked about..."

"The thing about me singing about Christ; I’m not saying “I love you Christianity.” I’m not saying “I love all the fucked-up terrible shit that people have done in the name of God.” And I’m not preaching belief in Christ. It’s just expression. I’m just expressing something I might not even understand. It’s a song of confusion, it’s a song of hope, it’s a song that says this whole world is a big dream—and who knows what’s gonna happen."

"To me, it’s like I’m expressing something that’s within me that I can’t really explain that really has nothing to do with religion. My love for Christ has more to do with what he said and what he believed in. Then the church put all this fucked-up bullshit around it and made it all this really evil thing at times. If you attach man to anything, he’s gonna fuck it up somehow, one way or the other."[2]

  • Regarding Pt. 3:

"This is a song about living in Seattle, Washington. It was a few years back. Miserable times. Here's a song about it, it's actually happy. Figure that one out."[3]

  • Regarding Pt. 3:

"A lot of us were really lost at that point in our lives and we were all pretty scared. So I wrote that song for everybody to sort of say, you know, everything's going to be alright, don't be afraid. Most of my songs were recorded for friends, a friend would be depressed or having a hard time and I'd write a pop song for them to make them feel better."[4]

  • Part 3 may be the oldest song on In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, having originally been released in 1991 on Invent Yourself A Shortcake.
